There are white, print-like marks in the opaque, black surface of one of these sheets; the other is waxed with transparent paraffin and scraped and marked on both sides. In this case, the paper becomes a membrane between an imaginary outside and inside, a front and back. At the same time, the scrapes and scratches form a whole in both the fore- and backgrounds. The value of these relationships in each sheet is increased because they create a spatial dimension that expands the entire image, aided by the transparency and the simultaneous inversion of white on black or black on white.
